Legal and Compliance Counsel Europe



Advise, draft, negotiate and more broadly support all legal aspects of the company, including:

  • Commercial matters (NDAs, distribution and supply agreements, standard T&Cs, etc)
  • Employment matters (employment contracts, intra-group service provision agreements, settlement agreements etc)
  • Corporate secretarial work
  • Dispute resolution
  • Insurance matters
  • Finance matters (intra-group and external finance agreements)
  • Maintain and follow up on matters with external legal advisers in different jurisdictions
  • Working closely with regional and global legal functions


  • Implement and follow up on the compliance system in place at the subsidiaries and working closely together with members of the Regional Legal and Compliance Office and Global headquarter.
  • Provide advice to the subsidiary and supervisory body in Italy on compliance with laws
  • Follow up on data protection matters
  • Receiving and investigating compliance violations (Speak-up System)
  • Carrying out compliance questionnaires, surveys, training and promotion
  • Monitoring progress against set global, regional and local objectives
  • Identifying new compliance requirements, initiatives
  • Developing new policies and monitoring adherence to existing policies

Professional competence

  • Master’s degree in law
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a legal role in an international business environment or law firm
  • Excellent knowledge of commercial law, corporate law
  • Sound judgment and ability to analyse situations and information
  • Strong affinity and interest in business issues
  • Talent to negotiate complex contracts and handle sensitive legal issues in an efficient way
  • Ability to work efficiently
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Profound knowledge of English and Italian, fluency in other languages is a plus (Spanish)

Sumitomo Chemical Europe wants to strengthen the Regional Legal and Compliance Office with a Legal and Compliance Counsel Europe

This person will provide legal and compliance support to various subsidiaries of the Sumitomo Chemical Group in Europe with focus on the businesses in Italy and Belgium and will be part of the Regional Legal and Compliance Office. The function will be located at the European HQ of Sumitomo Chemical in Machelen, Belgium.
